Causes of Fuel Contamination

Fuels become contaminated when there is high FAME content and reduced sulphur content. According to the RFTO, it is required that 5% of the fuel is derived from a sustainable source. Therefore, when hydrocarbon-based fuels, such as heating oil, red diesel, and white diesel, absorb water from atmospheric moisture, they develop a greater risk of degradation. Free water accumulates at the bottom of the tank in which fuel is stored and remains suspended with it, leading to fuel deterioration.

Additionally, moisture from the surrounding atmosphere gets absorbed into the fuel which then reacts with naturally occurring bacteria and leads to the accumulation of sludge matter at the bottom of the tank. This accumulated sludge clogs the filters and decreases the shelf life of stored fuel by contaminating it.

Symptoms of Fuel Contamination

Following are some of the common signs which indicate potential contamination of the stored fuel:

FAQs

What is RFTO?

RFTO is the acronym for Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation.

Why is HVO fuel less prone to contamination?

HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is a renewable diesel fuel produced after the hydrotreatment of renewable waste materials. It is free of fossils and impurities, making it considered a high-quality and sustainable fuel with lower contamination risks.

What are the benefits of using HVO fuel?

HVO fuel has over a decade of shelf life, having reduced risk of contamination. It reduces carbon dioxide emissions and is suitable for use in every season, even at low temperatures. It also releases significantly lower amounts of NOx and particulate matter into the atmosphere. It is a fossil and FAME-free fuel that complies with the specifications of EN 15940:2016 and ASTM D975, endorsed by various OEMs.

Why should I choose Network Environmental UK?

We offer highly affordable services to residential and commercial clients, ensuring compliance to the relevant regulations. Our company has developed a strong reputation over the years by avoiding downtime with reduced fuel contamination risks for our clients.
