Free water refers to the foreign liquid that enters the fuel tank and settles down at the bottom; it does not dissolve with the fuel, making it relatively easy to separate, which is done using a centrifuge.
The fuel is spun at a very high RPM in a centrifuge, and the free water is separated from the fuel due to the difference in density and viscosity. This method can also separate large solid contaminants such as sludge and other large particles.
Diesel fuel polishing systems are designed to filter fuel effectively, typically before it reaches the coalescer stage. These systems employ specialised fuel filters that utilise a fine membrane capable of isolating particles such as dirt, grime, and other debris, reducing them to approximately 25 microns in size.
While these filters, along with centrifugal water separators, are effective at removing solid contaminants, they are unable to eliminate emulsified water or certain dissolved impurities from diesel fuel.
Coalescer is the final stage of fuel conditioning services. It consists of an electrical or mechanical advanced filter system which is capable of separating emulsified and dissolved water from the fuel efficiently. Coalescer differentiates materials on the basis of their molecular weight and separates them from the fuel.
Some coalescers also contain an extremely fine filter which can separate ultra-small contaminants that have escaped in the first two stages.
