BS 2869 Fuel Oils Specifications

BS 2869 governs the fuel that is used for off-road applications and power generation. Let’s learn about their specifications.

Specifications of BS 2869 Compliant Fuels

BS 2869 are the specifications of fuels used in boilers and other domestic and industrial machinery, generators, agricultural equipment and other off-road applications. It can be further divided into 4 categories based on the applications, i.e.:

  • A2 Grade Fuel Oil
  • C1 Grade Fuel Oil
  • C2 Grade Fuel Oil
  • D Grade Fuel Oil

Let’s explain these categories one by one.

A2 Grade Fuel Oil

A2 grade fuel is a low sulphur fuel that is generally used in static machinery and off-road vehicles. It can also be blended with 7% biofuel to reduce the emission of toxic carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. You can also find these fuels in higher octane numbers for a smoother burn. Red diesel is the most common A2-grade fuel that is being used in the UK.

A2 Grade Fuel Oil Specifications

C1 Grade Fuel Oil

These specifications are generally for domestic heating oils. C1 is the highest grade of fuel for kerosene boilers in houses, flats and other domestic settings. You can get high-quality kerosene oil that satisfies BS 2869 specifications at Network Environmental.

C1 Grade Fuel Oil Specifications

C2 Grade Fuel Oil

C2 Grade fuel is the most common type of heating oil that is used in domestic settings. It is also known as home Heating Oil (HHO). Kleenburn Kerosene is an example of C2 grade fuel in the UK that meets the specifications of BS 2869.

C2 Grade Fuel Oil Specifications

D Grade Fuel Oil

D Grade fuel oil is generally suitable for old machinery, boilers and furnaces. They have a higher sulphur content of up to 1000 ppm. Gas oil is the most common type of fuel that meets BS 2869 fuel specifications for D Grade fuel.
